Grandma's House

 by Lester Ann Hyde Jensen

When Mom was just a little girl

Grandma used to say

United States was better

In almost every way.

Why it was like a garden

With beauty everywhere.

Surely the street were paved with gold

And people had no cares.

So one day when Mom was older

To go there was her dream

She wanted to see the garden

So great and lush and green.

Now Mother lived in Alberta and

Montana's just south or the border.

And when she finally crossed that line,

The landscape nearly floored her.

Why USA was quite the same

In each and every way.

She decided Canada was her home

And home was where she'd stay.

The story doesn't end there

There was family there she found.

She learned that she did love them,

And their love for her was sound.

Though she didn't find the Eden

She had expected there

She found the Eden of her family

For whom she learned to care.

And then the moral came to her

Grandma loved her native land

Not only for the greatness

But because of her Van Dam clan.
